Water-Fed Pole Window Cleaning: Why It’s Safer Than Ladders

4 min read

At SSR Window Cleaning, every window we clean across North Wales and Chester is cleaned from the ground using a water-fed pole system and purified water – not ladders and tap water. It is the approach health and safety guidance points to for avoiding work at height, it protects your property, and it leaves a clear, spot-free finish.

In this guide we explain why we chose water-fed pole window cleaning over traditional ladder methods, how the system works, and what it means for you and your home.

Key takeaways

  • Our window cleaners work from the ground – there are no ladders against your home.

  • Windows up to four storeys high are cleaned safely from ground level.

  • Every van carries a 500-litre water purification system, and water purity is checked daily.

  • We use pure water only, so no soap, detergent or residue is left on your windows.

  • SSR Window Cleaning is fully insured on every visit.

Why we don't use ladders

Traditional window cleaning relies on ladders, buckets and squeegees. The cleaner climbs to each window, often leaning out to reach the edges of the glass. Ladders can move on wet grass, gravel or uneven paving, and a fall from height can cause serious injury.

For window cleaning, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) sets out a clear order of preference:

  1. Avoid working at height wherever reasonably practicable – for example, by using water-fed poles.

  2. Use an existing safe place of work.

  3. Only then use access equipment such as ladders, and take steps to reduce the risk and consequences of a fall.

HSE guidance states that ladders "should not be your automatic choice". By cleaning with water-fed poles, our team avoids working at height altogether – which is why it is the standard method on every SSR van.

How water-fed pole window cleaning works

  1. Purification: tap water is filtered through the 500-litre purification system in our van to remove the minerals and impurities that cause spots and streaks.

  2. Quality checks: we check the purity of the water every day.

  3. Cleaning: the pure water is pumped up a telescopic pole to a soft brush, which lifts dirt from the glass, frames and sills.

  4. Rinsing: each window is rinsed with pure water and left to dry naturally. With nothing left on the surface to attract dirt, the glass dries clear and spot-free.

The benefits for you and your home

  • Safer for your household: no ladders left standing while children and pets are in the garden.

  • Kinder to your property: nothing leans on your gutters, sills, render or conservatory roof, and there are no ladder feet in your flower beds or lawn.

  • More privacy: nobody stands at your upstairs windows – we clean them from your garden or driveway.

  • Hard-to-reach windows: glass above conservatories, extensions, porches and bay windows can be reached safely from the ground.

  • No chemicals: pure water does the work, so no detergents are used on your windows.

A serious investment in safety and quality

Each SSR van's purification and pole system represents an investment of over £10,000, on top of the cost of the van itself. We made that investment because it is the safer way to work for our team and our customers, and it delivers a better finish.
